About the Legal, HR and Regulatory Services Directorate: 

The Legal, HR and Regulatory Services Directorate is responsible for legal and civic duties across the authority. The Directorate provides legal advice, representation and other services to the Council and supports Hackney’s Executive and non-Executive governance structures. It also supports the Chief Executive in carrying out electoral registration functions. 

About the role:

Following the departure of the current post-holder, a vacancy has arisen for a Governance Services Officer. You will provide proactive, efficient support for meetings of the Council, Cabinet, committees and sub-committees. Your role will include clerking meetings, so you must have the ability and confidence to create agendas, record and circulate accurate minutes, and write and present reports to a high standard. 

You will advise Members on governance, procedures and protocols, ensuring they are kept fully informed of changes in legislation which might affect Council procedures. As you will on occasion be expected to provide cover for colleagues across the Division it is important that you develop a comprehensive understanding of the wider service and its objectives. This is a highly demanding job but also varied and rewarding. 

Skills & Experience:

You will have proven skills as a communicator both verbally and in writing, and have the confidence to properly advise Council Members. You must have demonstrable experience in a similar position, be an experienced administrator and show an aptitude for prioritising, organising and planning. An understanding and knowledge of local government structures – including the role of Members – is essential, as is an understanding of the most recent local government legislation. You will be politically aware, have a thorough understanding of IT systems and possess either a Degree or equivalent experience.
