Many people think Merchandising is about picking and choosing gorgeous products. On the contrary, it’s about maximising profit on our vast array of product lines – so an affinity with numbers and a passion for trading are absolutely vital qualities. Likewise, analytical ability, strong planning skills and the capacity to work well to targets are key traits we’re looking for.
You’ll be an excellent team worker and communicator who thrives in a deadline-driven, fast-paced environment and has the potential to successfully lead, inspire and deliver results through a team. Strong commercial awareness about John Lewis and the wider retail industry is also a must.
Academically you will need a degree, in any subject, equivalent to a BA, BSc or higher at a 2:1 or above, plus GCSE Maths and English grade B or above, or equivalent. Merchandising involves a great deal of systems and computer-based work, so in addition you'll need to be comfortable working in this kind of environment and with analysing figures.
You'll also need to show a strong understanding of the Merchandising function, so we know you've got what it takes to meet the challenges ahead.
Finally, don't confuse this role with Visual Merchandising, which deals with display and product promotions.
