Job description

End-to-end business solutions typically encompass technology infrastructure, telephony systems, data architectures and enterprise-grade business applications. The Application Architect, reporting to the Lead Delivery Architect, is responsible for the delivery and integration of enterprise-grade applications within a business solution. The application architect ensures that all applications and services used within a business solution work together seamlessly to deliver business benefits.

The Application Architect must possess an in-depth knowledge of business applications, technology stacks and development practices.

Typically this role will be the primary contact point for application specific technical consultancy for a recently acquired, major business transformation Programme and will work in a dedicated, ring-fenced team in order to review, document and architect the internal and external application environments. This role also adds value by implementing common standards, systems and hardware that are consistently stable, reliable and which deliver business benefits. 

The role will be particularly suited to anyone with a strong applications development and/or integration background, as although this is very much an architecture focussed position, the post holder will be required to work with and challenge development resources and teams.

Essential Qualifications
Degree or higher, or a minimum of 10 years' relevant experience.
Desirable Qualifications
TOGAF foundation/certification an advantage.
Essential Experience
Minimum of 3 years' experience in an architecture discipline, or:
Minimum of 5 years' experience as a senior developer, integration specialist or systems analyst with exposure to architecture.
Desirable Experience
2 years'+ experience as an architect or senior IT professional in outsourcing, working with internal stakeholders and external clients/suppliers.
2 years'+ experience as an architect or senior IT professional in contact centre, telephony or customer-facing digital environments.
Experience of large-scale technology refresh programmes.
Use of an architecture tool such as EA or ARIS. 
Essential Knowledge
High degree of expertise with two or more of the following:
.Net languages and technologies
Integration technologies, including SOAP/RESTful web services, MSMQ, MQ, JMS, and WCF.
Web technologies including HTML, XML, ASP.NET, JavaScript and AJAX.
Java
Oracle PL/SQL 
Good understanding of UML
Knowledge of infrastructure architectures, including server design and deployment, clustering, load balancing, resilience and storage; an appreciation of how infrastructure affects application design and vice versa.
Knowledge of network architectures, including LAN and WAN; an appreciation of how network topologies influence application design, including communication protocols, security, bandwidth requirements and latency.
Desirable Knowledge
Knowledge of telephony systems and CTI.
Knowledge of customer-facing web applications and social media in a business context.
Communication Skills 
Ability to explain often complex concepts in a straightforward way.
Ability to communicate with people from different disciplines (especially non-technical areas) and different managerial grades confidently and demonstrating clear expertise.
Ability to communicate confidently with current and potential clients, and demonstrate clear expertise and a confidence in own ability to deliver.
Ability to define job specifications for development roles.
