URS is one of the world's leading engineering and environmental consultants, offering professional planning, engineering and architectural design, environmental, construction and programme and construction management services throughout the UK and internationally. We are currently recruiting for a Graduate Social Scientist to be based in our Bristol office. 

The Strategic Sustainability and Climate Change Team works on a broad range of projects orientated towards providing policy and project level advice to corporate clients as well as to international, national and local government agencies on a range of social and environmental issues. As Graduate Social Scientist, you will contribute to the preparation of costed tender proposals, reports and presentations for a range of clients. You will assist with Equality Impact Assessments, Health Impact Assessments and other social appraisal or research commissions. You will have very good writing skills, able to present numerical data accurately, summarise documents concisely and present findings clearly. 

You will be expected to undertake secondary research and analysis of literature and datasets under the guidance of senior staff; conduct project-specific primary research, using a mix of social research techniques, as directed by senior staff; and will take on growing responsibility for conducting analysis, informed by social analytical frameworks (e.g. gender analysis, social determinants of health) to interpret evidence, develop findings and translate these into recommendations for the client. You will engage constructively with environmental specialist colleagues in inter-disciplinary teams. As appropriate, you will explain and champion the importance of social dimensions e.g. regarding climate change adaptation.

You will have an enthusiastic appetite and up-to-date awareness of social policy issues in the UK or internationally. These might include international development, equalities, diversity and human rights; sustainable, healthy communities; employment, housing and other social policy issues; social and economic dimensions of climate change and other environmental issues. You will demonstrate an aptitude for engaging with stakeholders, including project affected community members. You will need to be proficient with Microsoft Office and have some knowledge of statistical software packages e.g. Excel, SPSS. 

You will be degree educated to BSc or equivalent in any subject, and will have a postgraduate qualification in social science or economics, either UK or international focused. Or, you will have a BSc/equivalent in social sciences/economics, covering a range of relevant skills and topics areas. It is desirable for you to demonstrate a commitment to your own continuing professional development, perhaps as a Graduate Member of a relevant professional organisation.
