A number of exciting opportunities have arisen to join Atkins Economics & Planning team.  Atkins is the largest engineering and design consultancy in the UK, the largest multidisciplinary consultancy in Europe and one of the largest design firms in the world
We require an experienced Senior Economic Consultant in our London office. The appointed candidate will join a progressive team of economists and economic planners which are strongly integrated with our planning, design and environmental businesses.   We serve a wide range of UK and international clients from both the public and private sectors.
 We are looking for economists or those with strong quantitative skills and qualifications in relevant disciplines such as economic development, urban and regional planning, surveying or statistics.   Candidates must be able to demonstrate an excellent track record in development economics, regeneration, economic development or property market research. We are looking for highly numerate and analytical people who are flexible and adaptable to the needs of a diverse workload.    The ability to work as part of multi-disciplinary teams is very important.They will need good knowledge of local and regional economic development issues preferably with a working understanding of planning, transportation and environmental policy.  In addition, we would welcome candidates with a proven track record in project-based international economics and/or economic planning in rapidly growing countries.   Candidates must possess excellent report writing skills and be comfortable co-ordinating and working with professionals from a wide range of technical disciplines.   
 Responsibilities
  • Identification, development and pursuit of new business and marketing opportunities in a range of sectors
  • Preparation of tender responses.
  • Undertaking local, sub-regional and regional socio-economic analyses which can contribute to a range of evidence base studies (including employment land reviews, local economic assessments, infrastructure assessments, retail capacity assessments etc).
  • Application of quantitative and qualitative research and modelling techniques.
  • Applied analytical (rather than simply descriptive) skills.
  • Preparation of strategy and policy documents.
  • Preparation of robustly written reports for client scrutiny and external publication.
  • Managing project inputs from a range of disciplines
  • Provision of economic advice to external and internal clients
  • Management, including financial management, of projects
  • Mentoring of junior staff
 Requirements
  • A relevant degree (preferably 2:1 and above) in economics, economic development, planning, surveying or closely related subject.
  • Preferably a relevant post-graduate degree in relevant discipline.
  • Relevant post qualification experience, ideally in consultancy.
  • A sound, in-depth knowledge of the UK national and local economic growth policy agenda. Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary environment
  • A sound aptitude for project management and co-ordination.  
  • Strong commercial awareness.
  • Good presentational skills.
  • Excellent quantitative, analytical and report writing skills.
  • Taking an inquisitive and innovative approach to understanding, researching and delivering solutions to complex problems.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure, and have proven success in meeting tight deadlines
  • Confident team worker, but able to work unsupervised
  • Flexibility to work in other UK offices according to workload demands (with potential to contribute to overseas projects)
  • Full Clean driving licence (preferable)
